　新居に引っ越したことを知った友人に「どう？」と聞かれたが、まだカーテンや家具が揃わない状態での新生活スタートだったため、これからだんだんにいい感じにしていくよ、ということを伝えた。

• 「徐々に」「だんだんに」ということを言いたかったのだけれど出てこなかったので辞書で調べた。今まで出会っていてもいい表現だったのに初めてだった。"over time"＝「長期にわたって徐々にゆっくりと」（if something happens over time, it happens gradually during a long period）

• 例文探してたらOED（Oxford English Dictionary）のサイトにある「OEDとOxford Dictionariesとの主な違いは何ですか？」という質問の答えにも出てきてた。ここに出てきたように"change over time"のカタマリで使われることは多いよう。

• ちなみにovertimeとスペースなしの1単語として扱うと「残業」という意味に。「残業」と言いたくてoverworkと言ってしまうと「働きすぎる／過労」という意味になってしまうので注意。

MICROSOFT PULLS PLUG ON AI PROJECT

（マイクロソフト、AIプロジェクトを中止）
　NHKテレビ「ニュースで英会話」より。日本語で知っているニュースだったのでとっつきやすかった＆数ヶ月ぶりで見たけど、4月度からのリニューアルでぐんととっつきやすくなった印象。

• "pull the plug (on something)" はプラグを抜く、という動作から、突然やめる、中断する、という意味。ニュース見出しなのでtheが抜けている。（to allow or cause something to end by stopping the money or support that is needed for it／to prevent a plan, business etc from being able to continue, especially by deciding not to give it any more money）
  • At the end of the season, the network is pulling the plug on the show.
  • They may pull the plug on the tutoring program.
  • The Swiss entrepreneur has pulled the plug on any further investment in the firm.
  • Jane pulled the plug on the whole project.
  • It's a wonder the director didn't pull the plug on that project months ago.

格闘技、実家、年金、退職金、確定申告、基地

• 格闘技／combat sports
  • martial artsは出てきたんだけど、私が言いたかったニュアンスは、combat sportという単語だったと思う。combatは名詞・動詞で形容詞はcombativeだが、"combat sports"というのが一般的なよう。
• 実家／parents' house
  • まあ話の流れで言えてるけど、ぱっと出てこなかった。former house?とかオロオロした。
• 年金／a pension
  • 以前は使えてた単語だったのになあ。全然でてこなかった。
• 退職金／retirement money
• 確定申告する／file a final (income tax) return
  • この場合のfileは「（書類・申請など）正式に提出する」の意味
• 基地／base

My English got rusty :-(

（英語力落ちた…）
　東日本の震災後帰国したカナダ人の友人と、5年ぶりくらいで再会。「前のが英語、話せてたよね？」と言われたw あまりにもショックで、「英語力落ちたの自覚した…これをきっかけにまた英語勉強再開するぞー」という感じのメッセージを送った。

• rust は「鉄錆」で、rusty は「錆び付いた」。これは日本語と同じく、今までできていたことがなまってできなくなった時に使える言葉。（not as good as usual or as in the past because you have not done or practiced something for a long time／(of a sport, skill, etc.) not as good as it used to be, because you have not been practising）
  • My tennis skills are a little rusty.
  • The singers were a bit rusty after the long break.
  • My French is a bit rusty.
  • I haven't played the piano for ages―I may be a little rusty.
  • My golf’s a bit rusty―I haven’t played for years!
• 「rustyっていう単語使えるんだから、英語力がrustyってことないよ！」と励まされるが、メールなら辞書使えるってだけですからー。

　Appleの新しいMacBookについてのレビュー記事（http://gizmodo.com/new-macbook-review-stupidly-thin-1698424838?fb_action_ids=10206700825741898&fb_action_types=og.likes）より。AppleはMacBookAirで世間を驚かせた時と同じことを、今回MacBookでやっている、という文脈で。

• "be at it again"というのは、何か以前にやったことをもう一度やる時のイディオムで、よくないことについて言われることが多い。ロングマンのオンライン英英ではずばりと"disapprove"という単語が使われている。（if you say that someone is at it again, you mean that they are doing something you disapprove of, which they have done before　※他の辞書での説明は単にdoing something againくらいだけど、例文はあまりよくない意味のものが記載されている。）
• 実際はAppleがMBAでやったことは成功した、という流れで話されているのにこの表現を使っているあたり、「Appleめ、またやってくれやがったな」的な皮肉というか逆説みたいなニュアンスが込められているのかなと深読みできて面白い（実際は知らない）。
  • I asked Tom to stop playing his trumpet, but he's at it again.
  • They are at it again. Why are they always fighting?
  • My neighbors are always arguing, and they were at it again last night.
  • She's at it again. Interfering in other people's business.
  • Look at all that graffiti―those kids have been at it again.
• "while someone's at it"の形にすると、「○○が〜している間に、〜したついでに（used to suggest that someone should/could do something while they are doing something else）」という意味で使える。日本語の「ついでに」と一緒で、いろんなシチュエーションをこの表現ひとつでカバーできて便利な表現だなあ！
  • I'm just going for a cup of coffee. Shall I bring you one while I'm at it?
  • Since we're cleaning the kitchen, we should wash the floor while we're at it.
  • “I'm going to the store to buy a newspaper.” “While you're at it, could you get some milk?”
  • "I'm just going to buy some postcards." "Can you get me some stamps while you're at it?"
  • Print out what you've written, and while you're at it make a copy for me.
