There's something in the air.

（何かが起こりそうな予感）
Mac World 2008 でかかげられていたキャッチコピー。で、私的にはここで発表されたMacbook airがとっても欲しいわけで・・・。

• in the airには文字通り「空中に」という意味のほかに、「（ニュースやうわさが）広まって」や「（雰囲気などが）漂って、気配がして」といった意味合いがある。英英（longman online）では（ if a feeling is in the air, a lot of people feel it at the same time／to be going to happen very soon）と出ていた。英英から察するに、「気配がする」というのは「これから起こりそうな予感がする」っていうニュアンスなのね。
• somethingは単に「何か」という意味のほかに、「何か意味のあるもの／重要なもの」というニュアンスを持つので、まさに「何かが起こりそう」といった期待を煽るうまいコピーなんだろうなあ、と思う。この意味合いのsomethingは、辞書だと"there's something in/to something" の使い方で（ used to admit that someone's words are true or their ideas are successful etc:）と説明されている項目が当たると思われる。
  • They had to concede that there was something in his teaching methods.（concede／認める）　
  • Do you think there's something to the rumours about Larry and Sue?
  • There's something in(= some truth or some fact or opinion worth considering in) what he says.
