英会話レッスンにて。先週大島に遊びに行ったというクラスメイトの男の子が、レンタサイクルしようと思ったら、宿の方(?)が無料で自転車貸してくれたそう。この話を聞いて、こういう言い方をよくするよ、と先生が教えてくれた表現。
- まるで自分の家族のように扱ってお金をとらないから、"on the house"で無料で、という意味になるのだという説明。「無料」の意味合いに「オーナー・店のおごり」のニュアンスが含まれる。(if food or drink is on the house in a bar or restaurant, it is provided free by the owner)
- この on は "it's on me!"(ボクがおごるよ!)の on と同じニュアンスだね。
- We had to wait for a table so they gave us all drinks on the house.
