It doesn't add up.

　ECC英会話podcasting にて紹介されていた表現。あまり長い期間つきあっていなかった友人２人が結婚することに。なんで？ワケわかんないよ！といった流れの会話。

• add up=seem reasonable or consistent／make sense。番組内では「つじつまが合う」という訳で紹介されていた。まったく知らなかった表現だった。
• 番組内では「子供ができたらしいよ」「ああ、それでit adds upね。」という会話になっていたが、辞書を引くとこの意味のadd upは通常否定形で使うとの注意書きがあった。
  • Many things in her story didn't add up.
  • He was troubled by a feeling that things just didn't add up.　※troubled=worried
  • His story of what happened to him just doesn't add up.
  • She explained why the work wasn't ready, but her story doesn't add up.
