　英会話レッスンにて、オバマ氏の大統領就任演説の内容を部分的に解説。ここでのtheyはその前の文で言っていた"the challenges"のこと。

• meetには、問題・危機を「うまく切り抜ける、対処する」という意味があるんだって（to deal with a problem or something difficult that you have to do ／ deal with or respond to (a problem or challenge) satisfactorily）。全然知らなかった。でも、meet friends も meet problemsも同じこと。同じmeetだよ、と、さらっと説明していたので、かなり一般的に使われる言い方のよう。けして「問題に出会う→問題が発生する」わけじゃないので注意したい。
  • The new building will mean that we can meet the challenge of increasing student numbers.
  • In order to meet the challenge the company must perform better this year.
• meet a deadlineといえば、締め切りに間に合うということ。「扱う」こと全般にmeetが使えるのね。
  • They failed to meet the noon deadline.
  • We are still hoping to meet the November deadline.
