Balance

（一番近くの泳げる場所まで、まっしぐらに向かいましょう。）
　最近購入した本『Balance--a guide to life's forgotten pleasures』（邦題：『人生をひそかに楽しむための45の方法』）より、人生をひそかに楽しむためのHow toのひとつ「How to be spontaneous」より。

  • beelineはbeeのline。つまり、ミツバチの通り道。ミツバチは巣に戻る時に最短距離を飛ぶそうで、そこからbeelineは「最短ルート／直線コース」というような意味になるそうな。なんとなくかわいらしい。"make a beeline for〜"で「〜のほうへまっすぐ（急いで）進む」という使い方ができる。
    • He came into the kitchen and made a beeline for the cookies.
    • After the game, we all made a beeline for John, who was serving cold drinks.
    • She arrived at about nine and made a beeline for the champagne.
    • When the train finally arrived, cold and weary travelers made a beeline for it.
  • spontaneousという単語は、日本語ではなかなか訳しづらい感覚の語だよね。私は半年前くらいにやっとニュアンスがつかめた感じ。和英でひくとよく「自然発生的な」と載っているけれど、どっちかっていうと「思いつきの」とか「行き当たりばったりの」っていうほうが近いと思う。
  • How to be spontaneous
    1. Ponder canceling appointments. (Fig1: a man is thinking) ※ponder／think about something carefully esp. before making a decision or reaching a conclusion.
    2. Cancel appointments. (Fig2: a hand which is throwing a datebook)
    3. Make beeline to nearest swimming hole. (Fig3: a man is jumping into the pond)
