Do not hog kite.

（凧を独り占めしないこと。）
　最近購入した本『Balance--a guide to life's forgotten pleasures』（邦題：『人生をひそかに楽しむための45の方法』）より、人生をひそかに楽しむためのHow toのひとつ「How to fly a kite」より。

• hogはアメリカ英語で「（食用の）豚」という意味だけれど、こんなふうに動詞で使うと「独り占めする、分け前以上にとる（to keep, use, or have all of something that should be shared／keep or use all of (something) for oneself in an unfair or selfish way）」という意味に（informal）。（その流れで、名詞でも「どん欲な奴」という意味でも使われる。豚のイメージ悪いなあ！）簡単な単語だし、使ってみたい。
  • How much longer are you going to hog the bathroom?
  • He's been hogging the limelight (=having all the attention, praise etc).
  • Don't hog the couch.
• How to fly a kite
  1. PoHave friend/stranger hold kite. (Fig1: a man is holding a kite and the other is holding a string.)
  2. Allow friend/stranger to let go when they "feel the moment." (Fig2: a man is letting a kite go)
  3. Do not hog kite. (Fig3: they enjoy flying a kite)
