Because... it's a pain in the neck.

(だって・・・面倒くさいんだもん。)
 英会話レッスンにて、文脈は忘れちゃったけど、私がこう言いたくてどう表現しようかな、というそぶりを見せた時に先生からのヘルプで出てきた表現。

  • "pain in the neck" っていう表現は今まで何度か耳にしていて、でも私がとらえていたニュアンスは「彼はpain in my neckだ」みたいに、「わずらわしい存在」という意味で使うのかと思っていたのだけれど、どうやら「説明するのが面倒くさい」とか「クレームを言うのが面倒くさい」というふうに「労力をともなうから面倒くさい」というシチュエーションでも使えるのだということを初めて知った。「寝違えて首が片方しか向けないのに反対側から呼ばれたら振り向くのダルイでしょ?そんな感じ」というような説明をしていた気がする。(pain in the neck=a bother; an annoyance.)
    • There were times when Joe could be a real pain in the neck.
    • It's a pain, having to go upstairs to make the coffee every time.(このニュアンスだね!)
    • This assignment is a pain in the neck.
    • Your little brother is a pain in the neck.
    • The customer is a pain in the neck and is always complaining about something.
    • Trying to find a parking space downtown is really a pain in the neck.
