Quit making a mountain out of a molehill.

（オーバーに言うのはやめてちょうだい。）
　ECC英会話podcasting にて紹介されていた表現。山登りの帰りと思われるシチュエーション。「もう足が痛いよ、歩けないよ」と弱音をはく連れに、「ただ息が切れてるだけでしょ！オーバーに言わないでよ」と返す女の子。

• molehillとはmole（もぐら）のhill（丘）で、もぐら塚のこと。小さなもぐら塚のことを山と呼ぶ、つまり、些細なことを大袈裟に言うことを"make a mountain out of a molehill"と言う。（exaggerate the importance of something trivial.／To exaggerate a minor problem.／to exaggerate an unimportant matter out of all proportion　※out of (all) proportion to〜：〜とはまったく不釣り合いな、〜に対して大きすぎる：proportionは「割合・比率」）
• 意味合いとしては「小さな問題を大袈裟にとらえる」なので、たとえば釣った魚は大きかった、的なただの大袈裟な表現とは違い、ネガティブな意味合いで使う、と補足説明があった。
  • Come on, don't make a mountain out of a molehill. It's not that important.
  • Mary is always making mountains out of molehills.
  • You're making a mountain out of a molehill. You wrote one bad essay - it doesn't mean you're going to fail your degree.
  • Clever lawyers can make a molehill into a mountain.
