　ホームズのストーリーを現代英国で再現したBBCドラマ「シャーロック」エピソード1 "A Study in Pink" より。原作ホームズでも有名な、2人が出会った時の会話のうちの一文。これはホームズが自分の生活習慣をワトスンに告げているところ。

• for hours/days/weeks/etc on end＝「何時間／何日間／何週間も継続して」（for many days, weeks etc without stopping／continuously）
• 「緋色の研究」では"I get in the dumps at times, and don't open my mouth for days on end."と言っている。
  • I get in the dumps at times, and don't open my mouth for days on end.　※get down in the dumps:憂鬱になる
  • He was tortured for days on end.　※be tortured:拷問される
  • He's often away for weeks on end.
  • She practices the violin for hours on end.
  • It's been raining for days on end.
  • For days on end she didn't answer the phone.
  • We sometimes don't see each other for months on end, but we're still good friends.
