Got my eye on a nice little place in central London.

(ロンドン中心部に目をつけている場所があるんだ。)
 BBCドラマ「シャーロック」エピソード1 "A Study in Pink" より。ワトスンが同居人候補だという話は一言も出てないのに、勝手に同居に向けての話を進めるホームズ。

  • have your eye on something=「〜に目をつける、ツバをつける」(to want something that you think might become available/to have seen something that you want and that you intend to get/to admire and want to have something/to be thinking about buying something)日本語の「目をつける」が同じ発想で面白い。
  • 原作「緋色の研究」では"I have my eye on a suite in Baker Street"と言っている。
    • I have my eye on a suite in Baker Street which would suit us down to the ground. ※suit somebody down to the ground:(人)が望んでいた通り、ぴったりだ。(if something suits someone down to the ground, it suits them perfectly, usually because it is convenient for them)
      • She has a young child so working from home suits her down to the ground.
    • He has his eye on the bigger apartment next door.
    • I've got my eye on a really nice sofa - I just hope we can afford it.
    • The museum had its eye on the painting for many years, hoping its owner would sell it some day.
