　BBCドラマ「シャーロック」エピソード2 "The Blind Banker" より。銀行員ヴァン・クーンに続き、同様の手口で第2の殺人が起きてしまった。ヴァン・クーンの死を自殺で片付けようとしていた警察に乗り込むホームズ＆ワトスン。ヴァン・クーンの死体から発見された弾丸が、彼の銃から発射されたものではないというホームズの推理が正しかったことを確認し、ディモック警部にこう告げる。

• 文章は仮定法過去。現在の状況に反すること、実現が困難なことを仮定する形なので、ヴァン・クーンの件を経て、ディモックが自分の言葉を信じる可能性は低い、とホームズが考えているのがわかる。
• "take 〜 as gospel" という形で「全面的に信じる／真実のように受け止める」（to believe that something is certainly true）という意味に。gospel（福音書）のように受け止める、というところからきている表現。takeの部分がacceptになる場合も。
  • They say it's sold out, but don't take that as gospel.
  • Don't take his word as gospel.
  • His opinions on international issues are taken as gospel by his colleagues.
  • You shouldn't accept as gospel everything you read in the newspapers.

• 同じ発想で、"the gospel truth"＝「完全なる真実、正真正銘の真実」（the complete truth／the undeniable truth）という表現も。
