  • ちょっと前のニュースより。30年分割で受け取れば税金はかからなかったけれども高齢(84歳)だったので税金で半分近くもってかれても一括受け取りにした、という話。日本語でしかこのニュース見てなくて、レッスン中この話をしようとしたら一括(lump sum)と分割(installment)の単語を全く覚えてなくて、説明するのがとても大変だった。表現としては以前調べたことがあったのに残念だった。

  • installment は新聞・雑誌に連載されているストーリーやテレビシリーズなどの1話のことも指す。(=episode)

    • The first installment of the five-part series will appear tonight at ten o'clock.
  • いわゆる名詞の「インストール」は installation。芸術作品の「インスタレーション」って何だろうって今までずっと思ってたんだけど、それもこの単語だった。
