That's cat's pajamas!

　英会話レッスンにて、なぜか cat にまつわる表現がトピックとなり、先生の辞書に載っていた cat's pajamas が全員の間でブーム。レッスン中に10回くらい使ったんじゃなかろうか。

• cat's pajamas=「素晴らしい、とても魅力的な（excellent／someone or something is very appealing／to be the best thing, person, idea, etc／something or someone that is better than everything else」という意味。なんでだろうねえ！猫好きだからうれしい！
• 辞書によると、英国では cat's whiskers とも。
  • Going to the movies was the cat's pajamas when I was a kid.
  • I really thought I looked the cat's whiskers in that dress.
  • this car is the cat's whiskers.
• 辞書（Merriam）の例文にcat's meowっていうのもある。映画「雨に唄えば」のナンバー"All I Do Is Dream of You"の中で、歌いながらケーキからキャシーが飛び出してくるあたりのシーンで "It's cat's meow!"っていう歌詞（というか間の手っぽく入る）のところがあって、今までなんで「猫がにゃ〜ん！」とか突然歌詞に現れるんだろうとずっと疑問だったんだけど、そうか、これか!!　長年の謎が今解けた！！！
• "cat's meow"を辞書で引くと「a highly admired person or thing／to be the best thing, person, idea, etc.」。cat's pajamasと同じ意味で使える。
  • That car is the cat's meow. [=I really like that car]
  • This flapper-style dress was the cat's meow back in the roaring 1920s.
  • He really thinks he's the cat's meow (= he has a high opinion of himself).
