We'll make our house comfortable over time.
(時間をかけてだんだん我が家をいい感じにしていくつもり)
 新居に引っ越したことを知った友人に「どう?」と聞かれたが、まだカーテンや家具が揃わない状態での新生活スタートだったため、これからだんだんにいい感じにしていくよ、ということを伝えた。

  • 「徐々に」「だんだんに」ということを言いたかったのだけれど出てこなかったので辞書で調べた。今まで出会っていてもいい表現だったのに初めてだった。"over time"=「長期にわたって徐々にゆっくりと」(if something happens over time, it happens gradually during a long period)

    • Students are encouraged to consider the way language changes over time.(Longman
    • Things will get better over time.(Macmillan)
    • Perceptions change over time (= as time passes).(Oxford)※perception:理解力
  • 例文探してたらOED(Oxford English Dictionary)のサイトにある「OEDとOxford Dictionariesとの主な違いは何ですか?」という質問の答えにも出てきてた。ここに出てきたように"change over time"のカタマリで使われることは多いよう。
  • ちなみにovertimeとスペースなしの1単語として扱うと「残業」という意味に。「残業」と言いたくてoverworkと言ってしまうと「働きすぎる/過労」という意味になってしまうので注意。
