今朝の「めざましテレビ」で紹介されていたブルームボール(ほうきを使ったアイスホッケーみたいなもの)の愛好者(?)のコメントより。
- "pick up" なんて使うんだ?と思って辞書を引いてみたら、"pick up" の項目、びっくりするくらい意味がのっていた。「拾う」とか、「車でひろう」くらいの意味しか知らなかったので驚き。
- ここでは「(言語など耳学問で断片的に)聞き覚える/〈芸・習慣などを〉身につける、こつをのみ込む( to learn something by watching or listening to other people)」の意。ブルームボールは難しくないよ、とっつきやすいよ、ってこと。
- He picked up the piano quickly.(彼はすぐにピアノを覚えた。)
- I picked up a few words of Greek when I was there last year.
- Mary watched the other dancers to see if she could pick up any tips.
- I was born up north, but I moved at such a young age that I picked up the southern ways real quick.
