Don’t panic, but do stay on your toes!

• "on one's toes" で「注意した、すぐに動ける準備のできた（alert, ready to act)」という意味。前に "keep someone on their toes" の形で取り上げた時（05/1/21）は、もっと「用心しなきゃ」というネガティブな意味合いなのかと受け止めていたけれど、今回ちゃんと英英で調べてみたら、どっちかっていうと「何が起こったとしても対応できるように用心／準備しておく（to make sure that someone is ready for anything that might happen）」というのが正しいニュアンスのよう。
  • Acting classes and occasional work in clubs keep the actor on her toes.
  • Bob always looked for difficult assignments because he believed that challenging work helped him stay on his toes professionally.
  • I have to be on my toes in her class.
