Fire her. She's got it the wrong way round.

SHERLOCK

（首にしたまえ。彼女は全く逆のことを言っている。）
　BBCドラマ「シャーロック」エピソード1 "A Study in Pink" より。ホームズと関わった事により、謎の人物に軽く拉致されるワトスン。ホームズの情報を流せというがワトスンは断る。男はワトスンに、セラピストは君が軍での体験に苛まれていると言っているがそれは逆だろう、君はあの体験を恋しがっているんだ、と話しかける。

  • 最初単に「彼女は間違っている」って意味かなーと思ってたんだけど、念のため辞書を引いてみたら "the wrong way round/around/up" ＝「さかさまに、逆に、あべこべに、間違った方向に」（with one part or side in the position where the other part or side should be／if something is the wrong way round, the back is where the front should be／to be in the wrong order）という意味があった。
    • Are the batteries in the wrong way round?
    • He’d stuck the picture onto the page the wrong way around.
    • You've got your T-shirt on the wrong way around.
    • These two paragraphs are the wrong way round.
    • The picture shows the pieces the wrong way around.
  • もともと "way round/around/up" で「ある一定の定められた（あるべき）方向」（a particular order or position that something should be in）という意味があって、そこからきている。upっていうのはその定められた方向が上下方向の時に使うみたい。the other way round/around/up という形でも使われるけど、例文を見ると、wrong wayはあくまでも「間違えた」方向なのに対し、the other wayってのは「間違えた」ってニュアンスが弱くなって「（文字通り）反対の」方向という意味合いが強くなる印象。 （in the opposite position or direction. • the opposite of what is expected or supposed）
    • The picture should be the other way up.
    • It was he who was attacking her, not the other way around.
    • I think it should go on the other way round.
    • I didn't leave you. It was the other way round (= you left me).
    • Art reflects life, or is it the other way around (=is it 'life reflects art')?
