Hindsight is always twenty-twenty!
（後悔先に立たずだよ！）
数年ぶりに虫歯ができた〜、とfacebookに書き込んだら「自分も歯をちゃんと磨かなきゃ、でも面倒くさいー」というコメントがついた。磨きなよ！後悔先に立たずだよ！と返信した。
- こういうシチュエーションで「後悔先に立たず」って言いたい時に一番しっくりくる言い方って何かな〜、と色々調べてみたけど、この "Hindsight is always twenty-twenty." がよさそうだった。（※追記：ちゃんと表現を調べると、やっぱりこの使い方は間違っていたような気もする。「後からならなんとでも言えるよ」というニュアンスからの「後悔先に立たず」なので、予防的に「後悔先に立たずになっちゃうよ」と使うのではなくて、事が起きた後に「わかってるんだけどねー、後悔先に立たずだよねー」とか、「だから言ったじゃん、後悔先に立たずだけどさー」という感じで使うのがしっくりくるのではないかな。）
- hindsightは「あとになっての判断・理解／後知恵」（understanding of a situation or event only after it has happened or developed／the ability to understand a situation only after it has happened）。うしろのほう（hind）を振り返るイメージ（反意語はforesight）。twenty-twenty(20/20)は米国の正常視力の値だそうで。「振り返って出来事などを見るとよく見える（前もってはわからなかったことも）」→「後になって言うのは簡単だ（その時にはもう遅いよ！）」というニュアンスになるらしい。（After something has gone wrong, it is easy to look back and make criticisms.／It’s easy to complain after the fact.／It’s easy to comment after things have happened.／If you knew then what you know now, your choice would be clear.）
- でも、素直に「過去を振り返って見れば先にはわからなかったこともわかる」と肯定的に使うこともあるようだ。

- "twenty-twenty hindsight" という形で、「後からならどうとでも言える」というニュアンスでも辞書に載っている。（used to say that it is easy to know what you should have done in a situation after it has happened, but you did not know what to do earlier／an ability to figure out what one should have done after it is too late to do it.）事が起きた後に「後悔先に立たずだよ（もう遅いよ、今さら言うなよ）」と言うのがこの感じかな。
