SHERLOCK

（それでおしまいさ。もう他に方法はない。僕たちは危険を冒さねばならない。）
　BBCドラマ「シャーロック」エピソード1 "A Study in Pink" より。ワトスンが事件（the case）についてホームズに訪ねると、ホームズは殺された女性のスーツケース（her case）の話を始め、殺人犯は彼女のスーツケースを持ち帰った。彼の初めての大きな過ちだ、と続ける。それでどうなったんだい、と続きを聞くワトスンにホームズはこう答える。

  • "It's no use" は、 "it's no use doing" の形で「〜しても無駄だ、意味がない、役に立たない」という意味でよく使われるんだけど（確か受験の時にも習ったような…？）、ここではおそらく longmanのオンライン辞書に載っていた、口語で使う「（成功の見込みがないから）もうやめた！」みたいな使い方の意味じゃないかなと思う。（used to say that you are going to stop doing something because you do not think it will be successful）まあ、「〜しても」の部分が省略された「（成功の見込みがないから）意味ないよ」と考えれば同じこといってるんだけど。
    • Oh, it's no use! I can't fix it.
    • It's no use — I can't persuade her.
  • 一応no use doing／(of) no useの例文も。有名な「覆水盆にかえらず」もこの表現。
    • It's no use trying to call on the telephone.
    • The line is always busy. They tried and tried, but it was no use.
    • It's no use asking me about it because I don't know anything.
    • There's no use resisting someone so much stronger than you are.
    • It's no use complaining.
    • You needed blankets to keep warm because the heating was no use.
    • Take this - it's of no use to me any more.
    • It's no use crying over spilt milk.
    • You can throw those away — they're no use to anyone.
