　BBCドラマ「シャーロック」エピソード1 "A Study in Pink" より。冒頭、自殺した男性の家族が会見で述べた言葉。

• "take one's own life"＝「自らの命を奪う」＝「自殺する」 は言葉からイメージも掴みやすいので特に書き出さなかったのだけれど、最近この表現を耳にすることが多いのでやっぱりメモしておくことにした。同意表現は"kill oneself"、 "commit suicide"。
  • There's no evidence that she intended to take her own life.
  • He threatened to take his own life, but no one believed him.
• ownではなく単に"take someone's life"なら="kill someone"ってこと。「命を奪う」。
  • No-one has the right to take another's life.
  • Two years ago he was diagnosed with the illness that eventually took his life.
