Two lumps, Uncle Albert?

　ディズニー映画「メリーポピンズ」より。笑いガスで宙に浮いちゃうアルバートおじさんとの天井でのお茶会。笑うのをやめないみんなに愛想を尽かして帰ろうとするそぶりをみせたメリーだったけれど、結局みんなのお茶を淹れてくれる。

• 昨日メモしたlump sumの関連。lump単体ではどんな意味だろう、と、辞書を引いてみたら、もともと知ってたはずの単語で失念してただけだった。まずはこのメリーポピンズのセリフにあるように、角砂糖を数える時の言い方。lump of sugar.
• 他にも、バターや肉など、塊で考えるものを数える時にも使う。メリーポピンズのこのセリフ＋いろんな物の数え方をまとめて覚えた時に学習したんだけれど、すっかり忘れてた。数えるときじゃなくても、「塊」という意味でも使う。つまり、lump sumは「総額をひとカタマリで」というところからの「一括」になるわけか。

• 泣きたい気持ち（a feeling that you want to cry）のことを表す "a lump in/to somebody's throat"というイディオムも。悲しみなどの感情のカタマリが喉に詰まって声が出ない様子から。
