There's a loophole in the law.

（法には抜け道っていうのがあってだね…。）
　『Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets』（ハリーポッターと秘密の部屋）より。人間界の自動車に魔法をかけて空飛ぶ車にしてしまったウィーズリーおじさん。妻に怒られて言い訳をするシーン。

• loopholeは「法律等の抜け穴、抜け道」という意味（a mistake in the way a law, contract, etc. has been written which enables people to legally avoid doing something that the law, contract, etc. had intended them to do）。「抜け穴」という日本語と発想が非常に近い感じがして面白いと思った。

• 単語として、nitpickだけ初めて聞いたのでこれを機に覚えたい。nitpick＝「つまらぬことにくよくよする、つまらぬあら探しをする」（ to find faults in details that are not important／to criticize for tiny faults that are usually of little importance／to criticize by focusing on minute details／to be critical of inconsequential details; niggle　※inconsequential：とるに足らない　※niggle：あら探しばかりする／to be excessively concerned with or critical of inconsequential details）辞書では基本的には動詞（自・他）として記載されているけれど、Dictionary.comではこの形のまま、名詞や形容詞としても載っている。

　ミュージカル映画「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック"The Sound of Music"」より。修道女見習いのマリアは、規律を守れず、修道院の問題児。Sister Berthe は規則違反の罰にマリアに床にキスさせる。今となってはSister Bertheがやってくるのを見ただけで、自発的に床にキスします、というマリアのセリフ。

• "take to doing something" で「〜が習慣になる」（to start doing something regularly／to begin (doing something) as a habit）。例文を見ると、過去形・現在完了形で使われることが多いよう。

• いつも迷う"lately, recently, these days"の使い分けもおさらい。イギリス英語では否定文・疑問文での使い分けがあるなどあるようだけど、とりあえず基本だけ。
• lately（in the recent period of time） は、現在完了形で使う。過去形でも使えるが、基本現在完了形。過去から今までの間（period）を指すため。

• recently（during the period of time that has just passed : not long ago）は、現在完了形・過去形で。英英辞書で見ると"ago"が使われていることから、過去形となじみがいいのがわかる。

• these days（at the present time／used to talk about the present, especially when you are comparing it with the past） は、現在形・現在進行形で使う。英英辞書で見ても、"present" という言葉があてられている。特に過去と比べての現在というニュアンス。

  • These days kids grow up so quickly.

  • These days, she has a very busy social life.

　ミュージカル映画「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック"The Sound of Music"」より。食事を抜け出して恋人のラウルと逢っていた長女のリーズルは、突然の雷雨の中、マリアの部屋の窓から家の中に入る。

• 以前もとりあげた（04/5/5）、後に続く名詞が被害を受ける時の前置詞 on にまつわる成句。"tell on somebody" で、「〜のことを告げ口する」という意味になる。「風とともに去りぬ」で、スカーレット・オハラの父が「母さんに告げ口する気だろう」とスカーレットに言うシーンでも使われている。 "tell A on B" で、「BのことをAに告げ口する」。（to tell someone in authority about something wrong that someone you know has done - used especially by children／to report someone's bad behavior／ to tattle on someone　※tattle：告げ口をする、秘密をもらす／to tattle to someone about someone.）

• この "you are many things" という言い回しは、BBCラジオのコメディドラマ「Cabin Pressure」で、落ちこぼれ機長のマーティンが、ベテラン副操縦士のダグラスに、自分のことを "Sir" と呼べ！と主張するシチュエーションで、航空会社のCEOであるキャロリンに、"Martin, you are many things but, believe me, you are not 'Sir'"と言われてしまうシーンでも出てきていて、ちょっと気になっていた。「たくさんの面がある、たくさんの顔がある」というような意味。
• "not (in) the least" に関しては２つ意味があって、真逆の意味になっちゃうから注意なんだけど、least にアクセントが入ると「少しも〜ない（none at all, or not at all）」という意味、not にアクセントが入ると「少なからぬ（だいぶ）」という意味になる。この記事を書いている時点ではスクリプトしか見てなくて音声確認してないんだけれど、文脈的に not にアクセントが入った言い方になっているはず。

• woodenとwaxyを掛けてるジョークなのはすぐわかったんだけど、woodenって具体的にはどんな感じ？と、辞書で調べたら、「（感情などが）活気のない、無表情な、堅い」とのこと。（not showing enough expression, emotion, or movement, especially when performing in public／awkward or stiff : not having or showing any emotion, energy, etc.／not showing enough natural expression, emotion, or movement）
  • The actor playing the father was too wooden.
  • Her voice sounded wooden and lifeless as she struggled to control her feelings.

• 記事の中ではベネディクトが "Finally I can photobomb myself!"って喜んでいてこれもまたたまらなくかわいい。フォトボムっていうのは、誰かが写真を撮ろうとしているところに映り込むいたずらのことなんだけど、アカデミー賞授賞式の際にU2にフォトボムしたベネディクトは記憶に新しい。最高の写真なので、ファンじゃない方もぜひご覧あれ。（Benedict Cumberbatch earns best photobomb of Oscars night as he crashes U2's snap | Daily Mail Online）
