I'm in the middle of something.

（今、取り込み中だよ。）
　NHKラジオ「ラジオ英会話」先週のスキットより。話しかけられたが、今、手が離せないというシチュエーションで。

  • "the middle of something"で成句。何かに取り込み中な時に。「何に」取り込み中なのかを明らかにすることもできるが、somethingを使えばそれだけで済む表現なので便利そう。
    • Please excuse my appearance. I was in the middle of washing my hair.
  • 前の日にのスキットで紹介されていた "I'm tied up now."も「今、手が離せない」という似たような意味合い。"tied up with 〜" と続ければ「何で」手が離せないのかを明らかにすることができる。
    • I can't see you tomorrow --- I'll be tied up with work all day.　
    • How long are you going to be tied up with the project?
  • "tied up" を聞いた時、以前聞いたことのあった"my hands are tied" も同じ意味なのかと思ったんだけど、後で調べたらちょっとニュアンスが違うことがわかった。"someone's hands are tied" は法律やルールや状況、責任など、自分ではどうしようもできない理由によって、したいことをできない、身動きがとれない状況の時に使う表現。
    • I'd like to raise people's salaries but my hands are tied.　
    • I'm in favor of public health care but my hands are tied. I have to wait for a government decision.
    • I'd like to go shopping with you but my hands are tied for I have to stay at the office today.
