別冊宝島名作アニメで英会話シリーズ「シンデレラ」で、"If the shoe fits, bring her in!"というセリフの解説で、形が似た慣用表現として紹介されていた表現。
- クツのサイズが合うなと思ったら履きなさい→自分のかな？と思ったら受け入れなさい→心当たりがあるなら自分のことだと思いなさい。という流れ。An unflattering remark applies to you, so you should accept it. (Slightly rude.)
- wear it は省略されることも。
- この間これを言えるような状況だったけどその時は浮かばなかった。
- The professor told me I don't write well! --- If the shoe fits, Ellen.
- shoeだけじゃなくてhatやcapでも使われる。
- Look, I didn't say who was to blame for this mess - but if the cap fits, wear it.
- So you think I'm a liar.--- 'Well, if the cap fits...
