（レイブンクローやハッフルパフでさえ、彼を責めたてた。）
　『Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone』（ハリーポッターと賢者の石）より。4つの寮ごとのポイントで競う寮対抗杯。ずっと勝ち続けてたスリザリンの勝利を阻めそうだったグリフィンドールだったが、ハリーたちが原因で大量減点されてしまう。寮内で居心地が悪いだけでなく、他寮の生徒からも冷たく当たられるハリー。

  • "turn on"を人に対して使うのって、ぱっと浮かぶのは以前にまとめた「（性的に）興奮させる」（04/8/9）なんだけど、文脈から考えてそんなわけはなくてw ここでの意味は「批判する、突然誰かを攻撃する」というような意味（to suddenly attack someone, using physical violence or unpleasant words／to attack or criticize (someone or something) in a sudden or unexpected way／to attack somebody suddenly and unexpectedly）。ただ攻撃するだけでなく、それまではそんなことなかったのに、「突然」攻撃する、というニュアンスがポイントなのかな。
  • そもそも以前まとめた記事にこの内容もちゃんと入ってた。忘れてた。完全に。重複になるけどまたまとめる。
  • 「突然攻撃する」の例文
    • Peter turned on Rae and screamed, 'Get out of my sight!'
    • The dog suddenly turned on its owner.
    • The rock star's fans began to turn on him.
    • The dogs suddenly turned on each other.
    • Why are you all turning on me?
    • I thought the strange dog was friendly, but suddenly it turned on me and bit me.
    • Bob knows a lot about lions, and he says that no matter how well they are trained, there is always the danger that they'll turn on you.
    • He suddenly turned on me and accused me of not supporting him when he needed it.
    • The country's leaders worry that the people could quickly turn on them.
  • 「（主に）（性的に）興奮させる」の例文。主に "turn 人 on" の語順で使われる。必ずしも性的な意味というわけではないが、性的な意味で使われることが多いよう。（※ネイティブ友が昔そんな感じのことを言っていた。）
    • The way he looked at her really turned her on.
    • She gets turned on by men in uniform.
    • Jazz has never really turned me on.
