SHERLOCK Harry Potter

（シャーロックの頭脳は、幾千もの記憶を素早く駆け抜けた。）
　BBCドラマ「SHERLOCK」シリーズ1第2話「The Hounds of Baskerville」の英語学習者用ノベライズより。物語も佳境に入り、キーワード"HOUND"の謎を解こうとするシャーロック。

  • "run through" は、「素早く読む、考察する、確認する、説明する」という意味（to read, look at, or explain something quickly／ to read, repeat, or practice something quickly／to read or examine something quickly／ to read or examine something quickly／to discuss, repeat or read something quickly）。run が使われているだけあって、疾走感がある。
  • スケジュールや手順の確認なんかでも使われる言葉。『ハリーポッターと秘密の部屋（Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets）』でも、大切なお客様を迎えるにあたって、家族にスケジュール確認をするヴァーノンおじさんのセリフとして出てくる。
    • We should run through the schedule.　※『ハリーポッターと秘密の部屋』より
    • Briefly, she ran through details of the morning's events.
    • He ran through the names on the list.
    • Could we run through your proposals once again?
    • Let's run through our lines one more time.
    • He quickly ran through the dance routine.
    • I ran through your report this afternoon.
    • Sally ran through the list, checking off the names of the people who had already paid for tickets.
  • 日本語で「ランスルー」というと、舞台等での通し稽古のこと（英語でも名詞 run-through が同意）。実際動詞の run through も、そういうシチュエーションでも使える（to go through a procedure or sequence; to rehearse a procedure or sequence／to perform, act or practise something）。
    • I want to run through act two again before we end this rehearsal.
    • Can we run through Scene 3 again, please?
