　コナン・ドイル著「シャーロック・ホームズの冒険〜青い紅宝〜"the Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle"」より。宝石を飲み込んでいたガチョウの出所を追求する中でホームズの発したセリフ。

• 今日は「bitter」について2つ知らなかった表現に出会ったのでメモ。ひとつ目はこれ。"to the bitter end"＝「苦難・困難の末の結末・最後まで／あくまで」という意味。最初「bitterなend」で「苦い結末」なのかと思ってて、でもまだ苦い結末とは決まっていない段階のセリフなので「？」と思い調べて見ると、苦難を乗り越えた先の結末を指している（used to say that one will continue doing something until it is finished, no matter what）のだとわかった。
  • The workers would fight to the bitter end for safer conditions.
  • Many climbers gave up before they reached the summit, but I was determined to stick it out to the bitter end.（summit：山の頂上）
• もうひとつのbitterはホームズとワトソンが調査に繰り出す夜の描写。「It was a bitter night,...」という始まり。ここでのbitterは「寒さなどが厳しい」という意味。

  • the bitter cold of the Midwestern winters
• 例文中の "follow out" は「（計画などを）最後まで（徹底的に）やり通す」という意味。
  • He followed out his orders to the letter.（to the letter＝文字通りに）
