　BBCドラマ「SHERLOCK」シリーズ1第1話「Study in Pink」の英語学習者用ノベライズより。「都合良ければすぐ来い／都合悪くても来い」という原作ファンにんまりなメールでホームズに呼び出されたワトスン。何の用件か聞くと、ホームズは悪びれず、携帯を貸せ、君の携帯でメールを打て、と言う。ここで出てきた一文。
　ノベライズは本当に言っているセリフから簡単な表現に変えられちゃったりして物足りなさがある反面、ジョンの心象風景や、場所、場面の説明が入っているのがなかなかいい感じ。映像を補完する効果がある。

• 「含む」でおなじみのcontainには「（感情などを）抑制する、こらえる」という意味もある（=restrain）。辞書には通常は否定語とともに用いるとの記載あり。（to control strong feelings of anger, excitement etc／to keep (a feeling or yourself) under control）抑える感情がいい感情でも、悪い感情でも使う。

  • The children could barely contain their excitement as the day of the festival drew near.
  • She was unable to contain her excitement.
  • She could no longer contain her anger and shouted at him uncontrollably.
  • When she saw that they were all safe, she could not contain herself and broke into tears of relief.

  • I was so furious I just couldn't contain myself (= I had to express my feelings).
