Harry Potter

（それ以外は一日中、ハリーは部屋に閉じ込められてしまいました。）
　『Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets』（ハリーポッターと秘密の部屋）より。ヴァーノンおじさんを怒らせてしまった上に、夏休み中魔法を使ってはいけないことがバレてしまったハリーは、トイレを使う時以外は部屋の外に出してもらえなくなってしまう。

  • "around/round the clock" は「一日中（ぶっ続けで）」（all day and all night without stopping／throughout the entire day and night／every hour of the day）という意味。時計をひと回りするイメージ。
    • Kim has been working round the clock to finish it in time.
    • Our stores are now open around the clock.
    • Reporters worked around the clock to cover the story.
    • Doctors and nurses worked around the clock to help the people injured in the train crash.
    • This station broadcasts news round the clock.
  • 主にアメリカ英語にて、"around-the-clock"と一語で形容詞としても使われる。
    • The prisoner requires around-the-clock surveillance. ※surveillance：監視、見張り
    • He's very sick and needs round-the-clock care.
    • an around-the-clock guard on the prisoner.
  • otherwiseは「さもないと、そうでなければ」という意味で使われることが多いけれど、ここでは「〜以外では」（except for what has just been mentioned）という意味で使われている。
