Harry Potter

（今やプリヴェット・ドライヴでの生活は、かつてないほどに最低なものとなりました。）
　『Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets』（ハリーポッターと秘密の部屋）より。帰省中、魔法を使うことが禁じられていることがおじさん一家にばれてしまったハリー。部屋に閉じ込められてしまったけれど、魔法で脱出したらホグワーツを退学になってしまうので、手も足も出なくなってしまった。

  • "all-time" は、ぱっと見「いつでも」というニュアンスに感じてしまうけれど、実は「かつてないほどの」という意味になる（used when you compare things to say that one of them is the best, worst etc that there has ever been／more than all others have ever been／exceeding all others up to the present time）。私は今までけっこう混乱して使っていたと思う。
  • 「いつでも」だったら "all the time" になるよね。ここで取り上げている "all-time" は名詞の前に置かれる形容詞なので、使われ方も変わってくる。
  • 他に、「不変の」という意味もある。"all-time favorite" なら「時代を超えて好まれるもの」。
    • The price of wheat had reached an all-time low.
    • They reached an all-time record score.
    • It's my all-time favorite movie.
    • The price of gasoline has hit an all-time high. [=the price is higher than it has ever been]
    • Production will reach an all-time high.
    • Unemployment reached an all-time record of 3 million.
    • Profits are at an all-time high/low.

  • ちなみにここでの low は、bad time のことで、「最低の生活」という意味（a very difficult time in someone's personal or working life）。"highs and lows" の形で、"good times and bad times"という意味で使われる。
    • The break-up of her marriage marked an all-time low in her life.
    • We all experience highs and lows in life.
    • He talked about the highs and lows of his college years.
    • the highs and lows of an actor's life
