　「ENGLISH JOURNAL」2003年11月号「付き合い上手の英語フレーズ36」より。

  • "put oneself in/into a person's shoes" で、「人の身に（立場に）なって考える」という熟語。探したら、"fill a person's shoes"＝「人の後任になる」や、"step into a person's shoes"＝「人の後がまに座る」など、"a person's shoes"="a person's sutuation"と捉えられる表現が他にも多数。ちなみに本では「人が置かれている困難な状況」と解説されてた。
    • Don't be cross with them. Try to put yourself in their shoes (=imagine what it would feel like to be in their situation).
    • I wouldn't like to be in your shoes.（君の立場にはなりたくないな。）
    • Imagine you were in her shoes.（彼女の立場になってみろよ。）
    • if I'd been in your shoes I'd have walked out on him.（walk out on〜：〜を捨てる）
    • Anyone in her shoes would have done the same thing.
    • I wouldn't like to be in his shoes when his wife finds out what happened.
