　『Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets』（ハリーポッターと秘密の部屋）より。夏休みに人間界のヴァーノンおじさんのもとに帰省中のハリーは、おじさん一家のひどい扱いに耐えながら、ホグワーツに戻れる日を指折り待っていた。ところが突然現れた屋敷しもべ妖精のドビーが、危険が迫っているからホグワーツに帰っては行けないと言い出した。それは困るよ、とハリー。

• "keep someone going" で「〜のおかげでやっていける、頑張れる、難所を乗り越えられる、生きていける」という意味に（to have or to give someone enough hope and emotional strength to continue living and doing things, in a bad situation／to make someone able to continue doing something at a difficult time）。
  • Her letters were the only thing that kept me going while I was in prison.
  • I don't know what keeps her going after all these years.
  • Their grandson is the only thing keeping them going.
• 夕食まで空腹で持たないところをおやつでしのぐ、乗り切る、といったシチュエーションでも使える。
  • I'll have a biscuit to keep me going until dinner time.
  • Have an apple to keep you going till dinner time.
• ちなみに"keep going"だけで使うと「困難なことを続ける」という意味に。人に声掛けで使えば、以前メモした、「その調子で頑張って！」という気の利いた表現となる（08/6/11）。
